Case Study: Emirates' Provident Scheme

The Provident Scheme has been supporting long-term retention of pilots since 1991, more than three decades before the UAE EOSB Savings Scheme.

Emirates' global pilot recruitment drive is making headlines this week for its salary and lifestyle benefits. One of the airline's longest-standing benefits, its Provident Scheme, deserves a separate mention.

Emirates introduced its Provident Scheme in 1991, likely making it one of the UAE's earliest employer-sponsored workplace savings schemes, more than three decades before the UAE EOSB Savings Scheme.

Beyond funding gratuity, the Scheme supports the retention of experienced pilots who are central to airline operations, trained over years and difficult to replace. The airline’s global recruitment drive spanning 7 months and 16 cities shows the effort that goes into building that talent pipeline.

After six months of service, eligible employees contribute 5% of basic salary while Emirates contributes 12%, rising to 15% after 10 years of service (notably higher than the monthly gratuity accrual required under UAE Labour Law). Contributions are invested through an independent trust, with benefits vesting over time, creating an incentive for pilots to stay longer. Emirates also guarantees enrolled employees at least the value of their statutory gratuity, if greater than the vested savings in the Provident Scheme.

As the UAE EOSB Savings Scheme encourages more employers to fund EOSB, candidates (particularly experienced professionals) will begin comparing employers not only on salary, career progression and employer brand, but also on their approach to long-term financial wellbeing.

Of course, funded EOSB won't be the deciding factor for every candidate. But in competitive sectors where experienced talent is difficult to replace, it can help employers stand out.

Emirates' Provident Scheme has been supporting pilot retention for 35 years.
