Earlier this week, we shared a January snapshot for DEWS. Now let's take a look at how GO SAVER performed.
GO SAVER offers 14 investment options across diversified, equity, fixed income and money market funds, alongside a capital-protected fund which is the default investment option.
The default option is an insurance-based investment vehicle that guarantees members will not lose capital. Because it operates within an insurance structure, returns are disclosed annually rather than on a daily market basis.
January in numbers
Diversified funds (Franklin Templeton). These globally diversified strategies, with exposure to more than 250 underlying holdings, gained between 1.2% and 2.3% during January. Performance was supported by positive equity markets and relatively stable bond conditions.
Global equity funds. Global equity strategies ranged from -1.4% to +1.7% during the month. Both funds maintain significant exposure to large US companies. However, differences in portfolio construction, particularly concentration levels (36 holdings versus more than 100 holdings), likely contributed to the variation in performance.
India equity funds. India-focused equity funds declined between -5.1% and -6.8%, reflecting weaker sentiment in Indian markets amid pre-budget caution and continued foreign investor outflows.
Fixed income and money market funds. Fixed income strategies were steady, returning 0.1% to 0.6%, while the money market fund returned 0.3%, supported by current interest rate levels and limited bond price movement.
Takeaway
In summary, January was largely positive for GO SAVER, with declines primarily concentrated in India-focused equity strategies.
For EOSB savings schemes, however, monthly movements should be viewed in context. Contributions are invested regularly over time, meaning members enter markets at different levels rather than making a single investment decision. This helps smooth the impact of market volatility over the long term.
That said, it's still important for members to stay informed about how markets are performing along the way.
